IPv6: room for direct connections

You’re connected over IPv4. Why does IPv6 matter?

Host your own services. A globally routable address avoids carrier-grade NAT, which can prevent incoming connections to your own server.
Connect peer to peer. Calls, games and file transfers can work directly, with less need for NAT traversal or relay servers.

End-to-end connectivity gives devices a way to reach each other, instead of making a public intermediary necessary. Both networks must allow the connection.

A public address does not mean open ports: a firewall still controls access. See NAT’s architectural trade-offs and IPv6 network protection.
